Holden's rattle sings of his late brother, Allie. After pouring out a heartfelt essay about Allie's baseball glove, Stradlater dismisses Holden by saying, "For Chrissake, Holden. This is about a ****** baseball glove." Stradlater, while holding on to his own rattle, failed to hear Holden's. In a similar fashion, the dealership worker, after being unable to hear the rattle in Daryn's car, gives her the "It’s time for you to go home now, Crazy Lady" look. The rattle didn't appear, but it was still there.

The most sensitive memories, the most painful, appear only to us. The rattle inside our brains every second of every day. Rattle, rattle, rattle, you hear faintly. To lower the volume is simple. To erase it completely is impossible.
I like how you talk about how we all have a rattle that no one knows about unless we say something. You could have also quoted where stradlater yells at Holden about why he is flunking out. Do you think Holden will ever tell anyone about his rattles?
ReplyDeleteA common occurrence with these rattles is that whenever you try to tell someone, nobody listens. Holden's character implies that people don't listen to him, which causes him to think, "Why bother?"
DeleteIt was interesting when you said how you could lower the volume of the rattle that has been troubling you, but you can not completely get rid of it. He mentions how his death still impacts him, "My hand still hurts me once in a while, when it rains and all, and i can't make a real fist anymore," This was after he punched all the windows in the garage when Allie had died. This is present within Holden and it seems that Holden hasn't made any progress in lowering the volume of that rattle or those past experiences. Something that I've been wondering is that Stradlater makes fun of his story, don't you think that Stradlater has his own 'rattle'? Should he really be criticizing Holden if he has had past experiences that hurt him?
